چکیده
Rockets and Feathers? Petroleum Product Price Movements “Shooting up like a rocket, drifting downward like a feather in the wind,” or so goes the perception of petroleum product prices. This became the focus of public attention world over in 2008, when the international price of oil surged in the first six months, only to fall dramatically to a third of its peak value in the following five months. This briefing note discusses factors influencing the relationship between the prices of petroleum products on the world market and the domestic retail market.

Consumers often complain that retail prices respond faster to increases in wholesale prices than to decreases. Despite many empirical studies confirming this “Rockets-and-Feathers”phenomenon for different industries, the mechanism driving it is not well understood. In this paper, we show that, in contrast to the theoretical prediction, asymmetric price adjustment to cost shocks, as well as pric...

Abstract. Considering the need to save energy consumption in less developed countries, it seems necessary to identify the effective factors of energy growth in the economy of OPEC countries. Energy intensity represents the energy required to produce a unit of product at the national level. Energy intensity at the level of an industry or a specific production process is calculated in terms of ph...
متن کاملInternational Capital Movements and Relative Wages: Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing Industries
In this paper, we use a multi-sector specific factors model with international capital mobility to examine the effects of globalization on the skill premium in U.S. manufacturing industries. This model allows us to identify two channels through which globalization affects relative wages: effects of international capital flows transmitted through changes in interest rates, and effects of international...
متن کاملPrice relationships in the petroleum market: an analysis of crude oil and refined product prices
In this paper the relationships between crude oil and refined product prices are investigated in a multivariate framework. This allows us to test several (partly competing) assumptions of earlier studies. In particular, we find that the crude oil price is weakly exogenous and that the spread is constant in some but not all relationships. Moreover, the multivariate analysis shows that the link b...
متن کاملPetroleum Taxes: Trends in Fuel Taxes (and Subsidies) and the Implications
In 2000 the price of crude oil rose to levels not seen for more than 20 years, and as a result so did the price of oil products. The price hikes prompted public debate about the level of taxes determining the final prices paid by consumers. By one estimate, taxes accounted for 68 percent of the final price in the European Union in 2000 (OPEC 2000). But what about developing countries, where pet...
